Korea beats Cuba

How about those South Korean ballers? In case you missed it they won the gold medal tonight, against a strong Cuban team. Below is the AP story.

BEIJING (AP) — There’s a new champion in Olympic baseball: the surprising South Koreans.
South Korea captured the gold medal and capped a perfect Olympic run with the country’s biggest win in international baseball, a 3-2 victory over defending champion Cuba on Saturday night.
The South Koreans ran their record to 9-0 by beating the mighty Cubans in what could be baseball’s Olympic farewell. The sport is off the program for the 2012 London Games.
South Korean reliever Chong Tae-hyon got Yuliesky Gourriel to ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end a dramatic ninth inning.

I haven’t been the biggest Korean baseball fan, but it was nice to watch them record their final out in the streets of Gwangju tonight. We were downtown for our monthly Korean/Foreigner dinner that Lindsay coordinates and happened upon a crowd of Koreans huddled in front of a shop with a TV.

Tension was in the air. There was a collective gasp when the Korean catcher got tossed for arguing a call. Then a Cuban player hit into a double play and the crowd went nuts. One guy jumped on another guy as they shouted in celebration. The crowd quickly dispersed to go drink soju. A few moments later an old Korean man jokingly admonished us for talking amongst ourselves and not watching the whole celebration on TV. It was clearly a nice moment to be Korean, and the game was a nice argument for holding onto baseball as an Olympic sport.
